51 Stuart St
Hamilton, ON L8L 1B5
Join us for a special May Day screening of the film Made in Dagenham (2010). Co-presented by the Hamilton and District Labour Council.
May Day (aka International Workers’ Day) is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement. It is also a time to remember and honour workers stuggles and victories over history. Join us as we highlight the past and present struggle for pay equity with a free screening of Made in Dagenham, starring Sally Hawkins.
Rita O’Grady (Sally Hawkins) works for the Ford Motor Co. plant in Dagenham, England. Despite performing the specialized task of sewing upholstery for car seats, women are classified as unskilled labor and paidmuch less than men. Encouraged by a sympathetic union representative, Rita agrees to bring the women’s grievances to Ford. The meeting goes badly and, outraged by the company’s lack of respect for them, Rita leads her colleagues to strike.
This event is free; all are welcome. Doors open and refreshments will be served at 6:30; introductions and the film starts at 7 pm.
