240-hour Labour Studies Certificate


Mohawk College, in partnership with the Hamilton and Brantford District Labour Councils, is offering an innovative, skills-based certificate in Labour Studies. The program is designed to give individuals and workers the practical knowledge and skills to take on active leadership roles in their community, workplace, and union. In order to successfully complete the certificate requirements, participants will need to obtain at least 180 hours of in-class training and at least 60 hours of relevant experience in their community.

The Academic Component is a minimum of 180 hours of courses, seminars and/or research approved by the Labour Advisory Committee, with at least 5 courses being a minimum of 20 hours or more in length. The Academic Component Program of Study includes courses in basic computer training, steward's training, leadership skills, collective bargaining, union counseling and other topics as courses are developed in conjunction with community partners. This flexible program will allow the participant to specialize in their area of interest and/or expertise. The program is offered on a part-time basis and courses are offered at a variety of locations and times to accommodate workers' schedules (days, evenings, weekends).

The Field Placement is a minimum of 60 hours dedicated to developing skills and to applying your knowledge for the benefit of the labour movement and the general well being of the community. Participants can be credited for approved projects and/or roles in the labour movement, environmental movement or other approved activities/areas of community concern.
