180-hour Occupational Health & Safety Certificate


Mohawk College, in partnership with the Hamilton & Brantford District Labour Councils, is offering a 180-hour Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety. This certificate program is geared toward Joint Health & Safety Committee members, Health & Safety representatives and individuals and workers interested in gaining a broader understanding of principles and concepts concerning health & safety in the workplace. The courses offered are designed to inform workers of their rights and responsibilities when it comes to workplace safety. This Certificate Program will provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to become active members of JH&SCs and valuable members of their local executive.

Participants must complete the following program of study to qualify for the certificate:

1. Occupational Health & Safety Training Level 1 (30 hours)

2. Occupational Health & Safety Law Level 2 (Provincial or Federal) (30 hours)

3. Occupational Health & Safety Committees Level 2 (Provincial or Federal) (30 hours)

4. Stress Awareness (30 hours)

5. A combination of short courses consisting of at least 10 hours of in-class training each (60 hours total). For example: Understanding and Applying Hygiene Monitoring (21 hours), Introduction to Workplace Threat Management (15 hours), Confined Spaces Program (12 hours), Workplace Bullies and Psychological Harassment (10 hours).

Note: Prerequisite for Level 2 Law and Committes modules is Workers Health & Safety Centre - Level One or permission of the Co-ordinator.
